Dead baby dolphin discovered in Estero Bay

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — Boaters out on Estero Pass noticed a baby dolphin floating in the bay.

They said they saw the mother pushing it into the water attempting to resuscitate it.

Michael Kunert said this was going on for a while. When he got a closer look he also noticed dead fish in the distance.

Kunert said he’s been fishing all his life. He said he has never seen anything like this out on the water before.

Robert Howell works to help protect dolphins near Fort Myers Beach.

He said the dolphin could have been stillborn, but believes it may have died from reckless boaters.

“When you come across something like this it makes you stop and look and say something bad could be happening here within the waters,” said, Kunert.

Florida Wildlife Conservation has been contacted. We are waiting to learn more about how this dolphin died.
